Clayton County

Clayton County's courthouse is inside the city limits — but the county that hears your case usually follows where the at-fault driver lives, and out-of-state drivers and trucking companies come under rules of their own.

Jonesboro is the county seat of Clayton County, and the Harold R. Banke Justice Center sits on Tara Boulevard inside the city limits. Superior, State and Magistrate Courts all share that building, and the Superior Court there belongs to the Clayton Judicial Circuit, which is Clayton County and nothing else.

Having the courthouse in town is convenient. It is also easy to over-read, because for a Georgia driver the county is set by where that driver lives rather than by where the collision happened.

The roads a Jonesboro claim starts on

Tara Boulevard carries US 19, US 41 and State Route 3 along the western edge of the city, with SR 54 — Jonesboro Road — running concurrently on the same pavement. SR 138 bypasses the city to the north and is the main route east toward Stockbridge. Interstate 75 does not run through Jonesboro at all, which surprises people who assume a Clayton County crash is a freeway crash.

The traffic here is arterial: signals, turn lanes, driveways and crossings. Cases like that turn on sight lines and signal phasing rather than on a lane-closure report, and the scene changes — a repaved approach or a re-striped turn lane erases what an early photograph would have shown.

A corridor the region is spending money on

In September 2026 the Atlanta Regional Commission awarded Clayton County $5.4 million for pedestrian safety work on Tara Boulevard. The scope is specific: crosswalks at six intersections, pedestrian hybrid beacons, ADA ramps and raised medians at five mid-block locations, running between Upper Riverdale Road and Robert E. Lee Parkway.

What the award tells you is specific and checkable: a public body looked at particular crossing points on this road and decided they were worth rebuilding. That is a more useful thing to know than a crash statistic we could not trace to a primary source. If you were struck at one of those crossings, how it was built — and whether the work had reached it yet — is a question worth asking.

Getting where you need to be without a car

MARTA bus and Xpress commuter coaches serve Jonesboro, and MARTA’s plans for Clayton County include a Justice Center Transit Hub. There is no MARTA rail in the city. People here navigate by the 1867 train depot and the courthouse square rather than by route numbers, which is usually the more accurate way to say where something happened.

If your car is gone, getting to appointments and hearings is part of the case rather than a side issue. Tell us early.

Georgia law changes. Statutes are amended and courts reinterpret them, so anything stated as law on this page — including any statute cited — may already be out of date. Check the current law, and how it applies to your own facts, before you rely on it.
