Interstate 75 does not run through Riverdale. It passes northeast of the city limits, and the traffic goes through the middle of town instead — which changes what a claim here is made of.

No interstate runs through Riverdale. I-75 passes northeast of the city limits rather than through them, so the traffic runs down SR 85 and along SR 138 — Martin Luther King Jr. Highway — through the middle of town instead. The city sits about twelve miles south of downtown Atlanta, immediately south of Hartsfield-Jackson.

That geography is worth having straight before a letter arrives describing your wreck as a highway crash. Most collisions here happen at street level, where posted speeds, driveways and turning movements are the whole argument, and where the other driver’s account of what the signal was doing is rarely the only available account.

Upper Riverdale Road does two jobs at once

Upper Riverdale Road connects Tara Boulevard to Southern Regional Medical Center — the road between the county’s main arterial and the county’s hospital. It is also the southern limit of a $5.4 million pedestrian safety project the Atlanta Regional Commission awarded Clayton County in September 2026.

Road design is not a fixed background condition. It changes, the changes are documented, and in a case brought by someone who was struck while on foot that documentation is evidence rather than context. Whether a particular crossing had been rebuilt by the day you were hurt is a question with a date attached to it.

The hospital at the end of that road

Southern Regional Medical Center has served the southern crescent since 1971. It is a 331-bed acute-care hospital and the third largest employer in Clayton County — an employer as well as a place people are treated, which is why it turns up in Riverdale claims from both directions.

It is not a verified trauma center, and we will not describe it as one. Which hospital an ambulance would take you to after a collision on SR 85 is decided by protocol in the moment, so we do not answer that either. What matters to a claim is narrower and more practical: that the records exist, that they are complete, and that somebody reads all of them rather than the discharge summary.

Georgia law changes. Statutes are amended and courts reinterpret them, so anything stated as law on this page — including any statute cited — may already be out of date. Check the current law, and how it applies to your own facts, before you rely on it.
