Do Online Settlement Calculators Tell Your Case Value?
Why online settlement calculators are data-collection tools, and what actually determines what your injury case is worth.
You were hurt in a wreck, and now you want a number. Somewhere between the emergency room visit and the first phone call from an adjuster, you started searching online, and a banner ad promised to tell you exactly how much your case is worth. Enter a few details, click a button, get an answer in thirty seconds. It sounds like exactly what you need right now.
It isn’t. Those calculators don’t do what they claim to do.
What Those “Free Settlement Calculators” Are Actually Built For
Try one and see what happens. What you get back is not a case valuation. What the website gets is your name, your email address, and your phone number.
That is the entire point of the tool. It is a lead-capture form dressed up as a legal service. Your contact information goes onto a mailing list, and then it gets handed off to a large law firm that has never spoken to you, never seen your medical records, and has no particular interest in your case beyond the fact that your data landed in their pipeline. The number the calculator spits out is not based on anything about your situation, because there is no way for a form field to know anything about your situation.
Why No Algorithm Can Price Your Injury
The value of a personal injury claim is not a formula you can run on four inputs. It comes out of the specific facts of what happened to you, and those facts have to be gathered and reviewed by someone who knows what to look for.
Start with the police report. That document establishes how the collision happened, who the officer identified as at fault, what the parties said at the scene, whether there were witnesses, and what damage was visible to the vehicles. Fault matters enormously to what a claim is worth, and no calculator asks you a single meaningful question about it.
Then there are your injuries. Not “back pain” as a checkbox, but the actual diagnosis, the treatment you have needed, whether you are improving, whether you face surgery, and how the injury has changed what you can do day to day. Two people can walk away from identical crashes with wildly different claims because their bodies responded differently.
And then there are your medical expenses. What have you been billed? What is still outstanding? What treatment do your doctors expect you will still need? Those numbers are foundational, and they are almost never fully known in the first weeks after a wreck.
What Actually Happens When You Get a Real Evaluation
A real conversation about case value looks nothing like a web form. It looks like sitting down with someone and going through the police report line by line. Going through what your injuries are and how they were diagnosed. Going through your medical expenses and what treatment is still ahead of you.
That takes time, and it takes a person who is willing to spend it with you. It also means the answer you get may not be a single tidy figure right away, especially if you are still treating. A lawyer who tells you a number before knowing whether you need another procedure is guessing, and guessing low is how cases get settled for less than they are worth.
Protect Your Information While You Are Still Deciding
You are already dealing with insurance adjusters, medical providers, and possibly a repair shop. The last thing you need is your phone number circulating through lead brokers and firms you never contacted. Be deliberate about who you hand your contact information to during a claim.
If you want to know what your case is worth, ask a lawyer directly and ask them to walk you through the reasoning. If the answer arrives in thirty seconds from a button on a website, it was never about your case in the first place.

It doesn’t exist. I called one of them. I pretended to be a client. These fake sentiment calculators, you know what they do? They collect your name, your email, your phone number, so they have your data. And they’re going to put you on a mailing list and all this other shit that you don’t want to be a part of. And then they give your information to a big law firm that doesn’t care anything about you.
If you want to know how much your case is worth, call me. We’ll go through the police report. We’ll go through what your injuries are. We’ll go through what your medical expenses are. That’s how you know how much your case is worth, not by clicking a button in 30 seconds. Stop doing that shit.
