What to Do After a Car Wreck in Atlanta

A step-by-step guide to what you should do after a car wreck in Atlanta that was not your fault, from safety to evidence to counsel.

A car wreck happens in seconds, and the minutes that follow are some of the most stressful you will ever experience. Your heart is pounding, your car may be damaged or undrivable, and the other driver may be apologizing, arguing, or asking you to keep things quiet. In the middle of all that, you are expected to make decisions that will shape whether you can prove what happened later. Knowing the right steps ahead of time takes the guesswork out of a moment when you will not be thinking clearly.

If you are ever in a wreck that was not your fault, here is what to do.

Get Somewhere Safe, Then Call the Police

Your first priority is your own safety. Move yourself and, if it is safe to do so, your vehicle out of traffic and away from the flow of oncoming cars. A second impact on a busy Atlanta road can turn a minor collision into a catastrophe.

Once you are somewhere safe, call the police immediately.

This step gets skipped more than any other, and it is the one people regret most. It does not matter if you think you do not need the police. It does not matter if the damage looks small, if the other driver seems friendly, or if you feel fine standing on the shoulder. You want to create a track record of evidence.

That record matters because memories change and stories change. The driver who admits fault at the scene often tells a very different version to their insurance company a week later. Without an officer’s report documenting who was where, what the vehicles looked like, and what each driver said, your claim can turn into your word against theirs. Insurance adjusters know this, and they will take advantage of any gap in the record.

Calling the police also creates a timestamped record that the crash happened at all. That is important because injuries from a wreck do not always announce themselves right away. Adrenaline masks pain. If soreness or stiffness sets in over the following days, you want an official record connecting that pain back to a real, documented collision.

Document the Scene With Photos and Video

If you are physically able, take photos and videos before anything moves.

Your phone is the most useful tool you have at the scene. Capture the damage to every vehicle involved, from multiple angles and distances. Get the position of the cars where they came to rest, if they have not already been moved. Photograph skid marks, debris, broken glass, and anything else that shows how the impact happened.

Then widen your lens. Photograph the intersection or stretch of road. Get traffic signals, stop signs, lane markings, and any obstruction that blocked a driver’s view. Capture weather and lighting conditions. Take a picture of the other driver’s license plate, insurance card, and driver’s license if they will let you.

Video is especially useful because it captures context that still photos miss, including sounds, spontaneous statements, and the overall layout of the scene. Scenes get cleared quickly. Cars get towed, glass gets swept up, and the evidence disappears. What you capture in those first few minutes cannot be recreated later.

Call a Lawyer Before You Call the Insurance Company

The third step is to call a lawyer.

Once a wreck is reported, insurance companies move fast. You may hear from an adjuster within a day, asking for a recorded statement, offering a quick check, or pushing you toward a decision before you have any idea whether you are actually hurt. Those calls sound helpful. They are not neutral.

Bringing in a lawyer early means someone is handling those conversations for you, gathering the evidence while it still exists, and making sure the value of your claim reflects everything you have lost, not just what an adjuster is willing to offer in the first week.

Handling the Damage to Your Car

Your vehicle still needs to be repaired, and that is a separate headache from your injury claim. Work with a repair shop you trust to get your car properly fixed. If you are looking for a recommendation in the area, Martinez Prime Auto handles that work.

Take these steps in order and you protect yourself twice: once at the scene, and again months later when someone tries to argue the wreck did not happen the way you know it did.
